Hello divas! I hope your week is going well. Mine has been quite busy at work but overall not too bad. If you are a regular reader of this blog, you know that in the past I have shared the importance of cross-training. As a runner, it is so important to do OTHER fitness activities than JUST running. And my weakest area hands down is my core. So when I consider what cross training activities to do, I always do at least a little bit of core work. Today I thought I would talk a little about your core and why it is so important as well as share a short and effective workout that you can do after your run (or do you favorite fitness activity).
When I first started running, I focussed on the actual running part. I mean if I can’t make it a half a mile without being out of breath, I really need to work on that right. What I didn’t realize at the time is that there is so much more to being a good runner. Not only do you need to work on your actual running, but you need to be improve your strength through strength training and core work.
So why is the core so important? A stong core allows an athlete to be healthy by stabilizing your body while working out. For a runner, it helps improve your form when you get tired. Other benefits to a strong core for runners include strengthening your muscles and joints, helping prevent muscle imbalances and feeling mentally stronger.
Today I am sharing my Diva Core Workout for Runners. This is an easy core workout that can be done both by itself or after an additional workout (such as a run). While the workout itself if relatively simple, you can also modify these moves to make them more difficult such as adding steps to the plank or alternating your arms and legs in the superman. You can also add weights to the Russian twists for an extra challenge.
