Hello divas! I hope that you are having a fabulous week so far. I have started my first round of the 21 Day Fix Extreme to give me a jump start on my goals for 2016 and I have started my training for my spring races so it has been a bit busy to say the least. Today I want to talk about something that I struggle with in my desire to eat a healthy diet – snacking. I love snack food. Salty, sweet, it doesn’t matter though I lean towards sweets more often than not (see how to stop sugar cravings). So I am always trying to find ways to help control my hunger and continue to eat a healthy diet. Following one of the 21 Day Fix portion control plans have helped but today I am sharing my 5 tips for healthier snacking.
Plan ahead. The first and one of the easiest ways to help promote healthier snacking is to plan your meals and snacks. Take your own snacks with you to work. Keep something to nibble on in your purse. Planning ahead helps both with portion control and enables you to ensure you have something healthy on hand. Anything that keeps you from the vending machine is a good thing.
Consider fruit and veggies. When deciding on your snack of choice, consider taking some fruit and/or veggies. Fruits and veggies help with hydration and gives you the fiber and nutrients your body needs. If you have a sweet tooth like I do, fruit in particular can help stop your sugar cravings.
Don’t forget the protein. Protein is so important to have enough of in your diet. As a runner, I need the protein to help maintain energy and help rebuild muscles after a workout. It is also great for snacking because it helps you feel fuller longer.
Eat regular meals. It is also important to eat your meals are regular timeframes. This will help maintain your energy levels and keep you from the crashes leading you to find the closest food to snack on (not always the good stuff).
Eat all-natural foods. No matter what you choose to snack on, aim for foods that are all-natural with no added preservatives or overly processed junk. I always try to eat clean when I can, but when that isn’t an option or if I just want a bag of chips, I try to find the healthiest versions I can.
