Hello divas! I hope that your week has gotten off to a great start so far. The weather has been a little dreary the last couple of days but not too hot or too cold so I can’t complain. Life around here has been super busy though. With the end of the semester, training for my summer races, planning my meals, getting my workouts in and family events, you can imagine how packed my schedule is. Which sometimes makes it difficult to maintain that healthy diet that I have working on so far this year. If your life is anything like mine, I’m sure you can relate. And if you are a regular reader of this blog, you know that I have talked quite a bit about healthy snacking and staying healthy while at work. But I haven’t spent a lot of time explaining how to snack when you are out and about. One thing I like to do is keep an on-the-go healthy snack kit in my purse or desk drawer at work for those times when I feel like I am starving (or forgot to eat lunch!) but want to avoid the drive-thru or vending machine. These are easy to put together and maintain and I am so thrilled to be working with ZonePerfect® Nutrition Bars to show you how to make one for yourself.
The secret to successful healthy snacking on-the-go is to be prepared. It does you no good to have a healthy diet if you are visiting the vending machine every afternoon or constantly stopping somewhere for ice cream or high calorie smoothies every time you are away from home. I like to pack a small bag to keep with me for those times when I just need to eat something in order to keep my energy up and I want those snacks to be healthy and actually do some good for my body. One of my favorite things to throw in my snack kit is a nutrition bar and ZonePerfect® Nutrition Bars are perfect for this.
ZonePerfect® Nutrition Bars can be found at your local Walmart store on the nutritional supplement aisle (think the nutritional & protein shakes and bars). These bars are perfect for the high energy lifestyle and can give you the 2nd, (3rd, 4th, 5th) wind that you need to have the vitality and energy that you need for your busy days. They will also keep you feeling full until it’s time for your meal thanks to the protein and fiber in them.
The bars satisfy your cravings, are convenient, leave you feeling satisfied, and most of all, are nutritious. They also come in several different varieties (I loved the dark chocolate almond and fudge graham), each with no less than 10 grams of protein, no high fructose corn syrup, and are a good source of fiber. Not to mention they are super tasty. The bars often feel like more of a treat than something with nutritional value.
If you want to create an on-the-go healthy snack kit of your own, it’s an easy 3 step process:
- Find a bag or container. You don’t have to get super fancy with this. You can put the non-packaged foods in sandwich bags or other small containers you may find around the house. I have lots of extra make-up bags of all sizes that I use to keep all the smaller bags or containers together. You’d be surprised what you can find around the house :).
- Get your food together. So what do you put in your kit? There are tons of options here. I love bars like ZonePerfect® Nutrition Bars because they are easy to carry with you. Nuts are a great idea as well – almonds are my favorite. Some granola or whole grain cereal is nice to nibble on. And I always keep some sort of fruit. Dried fruit or fruit that won’t go bad as easily such as apples, oranges or bananas work best for this. The basic idea is whatever foods you like to eat that can be portable and has nutritional value is what you need to put in your kit.
- Pack and go. Lastly, pack all the food in your bag and head out the door. The great thing about this kit is that it can go in a purse, gym bag, desk drawer at work, your car, wherever you may need to stash it for those hunger emergencies.
