Hello divas. I hope that your week has been going well and you are getting ready for a fabulous Valentine’s Day on Saturday (however you plan to celebrate). Valentine’s Day is all about love and there are so many things I love in my life – including running. And half marathons are something that I particularly enjoy so today I thought I would share some things I love about half marathons.
As you probably know if you read the blog, I am a runner who enjoys half marathons. I have run 10 of them to date in 5 different states (with more coming this spring). It is such a fun distance to run – requiring enough time to train and push yourself but not so much that the training takes over your life. It is my absolute favorite distance to run hands down.
The feeling of accomplishment. One of the biggest reason I love half marathons is the feeling of accomplishment I get when I cross the finish line. It takes a lot out of you to run (or run/walk in my case) 13.1 miles at one time. It requires time to train and to push yourself past what you think you can do. It’s a relief when it’s done and I usually am so proud that I was able to do it.
The scenery. I know there are scenic 5Ks and 10Ks out there, but there is only so much you can do with that mileage. There are some super pretty races out there and you can find them in every state in the U.S. I have run 10 halves so far and have seen both Disney Parks (both in Florida & California), downtown Nashville twice, downtown Atlanta, my very pretty alma mater (Berry College), downtown Chattanooga, a historic civil war battlefield, and, of course, the Vegas Strip. I am looking forward to lots of fun places this year and can’t wait to share my experiences with you.
The support. It is hard to stay motivated to finish a half marathon. I love the support I get when I am running one. There are the volunteers who direct traffic, hand out water and cheer on runners. There are spectators that many times have the best signs that put a smile on my face. And there are other runners who smile, say hi as they pass and offer words of encouragement if it looks like I am struggling.
Being able to eat whatever I want the rest of the day. I am usually pretty aware of what I am putting into my body. I mean I have to fuel for my runs and am trying to lose a few pounds as well. But after a half marathon, I don’t really worry too much about what I eat. I just want the yummiest hamburger and fries that I can find. Or something super sweet and fattening.
The bling. And lastly, there is the bling. If I am going to put myself through running a half marathon, I want some bling in the process. And boy is some of the bling fabulous. Medals of all sizes, shapes and weights. Fun stuff.
