Hi divas! I hope your weekend is going well so far. It’s been pretty good here I have to say. While it has been a bit cooler than the past couple of weeks, it is still lovely spring weather here in Tennessee which means I can actually run outdoors! It is no secret that I HATE the treadmill. I just can’t run on it so I prefer to run outside – even in the super cold or super hot weather. I’m a bit miserable but I tough it out. Why do I enjoy it so much? Today I am sharing my 5 reasons running outdoors rocks.
The great outdoors. Running outside allows you to explore the world around you. There is pretty scenery. You can explore new places when you run while on vacation. When it’s sunny, you can get a natural dose of Vitamin D. You get to spend time in nature.
Variety. Related to the great outdoors, is variety. When you are running on a treadmill at the gym, there is only so much variety you can give your workout. When you run outdoors, the options are limitless. You can do speed work, intervals, long easy runs or even walk. You can run on flat roads or trails. You can add as many or few hills as you want. You can try out a new route to add some spice to your workout.
Train for race conditions. Races happen in all kinds of weather conditions and in all kinds of environments. Running outside allows you to train for race conditions. Is your race hilly? You can add hills to your training. Are you doing a trail race? Find some running trails nearby to practice. Running outside in less than ideal weather allows your body to acclimate itself so you will know how to handle whatever mother nature throws at you come race time. Burn more calories. Because of the variety of places to run, you will burn more calories outdoors than on the treadmill. Running outside also allows you to add intervals to your workout easier than indoors.
Alone time. While some people prefer to run with others around, running outdoors also allows you to be completely alone if needed. It is hard to find a time at the gym when no one else is around. But you can run a route completely by yourself if you wish. I love doing this as it allows me to clear my head of the things going on in my life and live in the moment.
