Hello divas! I hope that you have gotten your week off to a fantastic start. It has been raining nonstop for the last 2 days and the temps have started feeling more like early winter than fall here in Tennessee but otherwise mine hasn’t been too bad. It can be hard to run in cold weather. I mean it’s cold and can be hard to get warm, no matter how fast you run. But you can do it if you are smart and prepared. So today I am sharing my 5 tips to survive the chill when running in cold weather.
Wear the right clothes & gear. This is very important. You will need to wear wicking fabrics and dress in layers. This will keep the body heat in and the chill out. For more specifics on what to wear in the cold, you can read my previous post, Running in Cold Weather – The Essentials of Cold Weather Running Clothing.
Cover the extremities. It is extremely important to cover the extremities when you run in cold weather. This means the hands, the head, the feet and, if its is extremely cold, maybe even the face. This will vary depending on where you live. I always wear running shirts that have longer sleeves that will cover my hand until the temps get close to freezing when I’ll get out the running gloves. I always have a fleece lined headband to cover the ears and if it gets too cold, a hat.
Dress 15-20 degrees warmer. When it gets cold outside, it may seem like a good idea to bundle up before heading out the door. But it is not. You will want to dress for 15-20 degrees warmer. While you will be cold when you first start out, as the miles pile on, your body will warm up pretty quickly. The worst thing is to be too hot while out on the road.
Warm up. It can take longer in the cold for your body to warm up those muscles. I usually try to warm up in the house before I head out to hit the road.
Watch your stride. Sometimes it is better to shorten your stride a bit when running in the cold. With the cold comes the icy, snowy weather. You will want to watch you steps a little more closely than normal to avoid slipping on the icy, wet roads.
