The holiday season is in the books. I had a fabulous holiday break with almost two weeks off. I spent time with family and pretty much just got caught up on blogging and sleep. But now it’s over and time to return to normal which means the return of Five Things I Learned This Week Friday.
I run faster with pretty scenery. I love living in Chattanooga, TN. It is such a beautiful city and perfect for runners. I ran the Karen Lawrence Run for St. Jude on New Year’s Eve night downtown then followed that up with a 4 mile run on New Year’s morning on the Tennessee Riverwalk. And managed to clock super fast times. I had a 13:26/mile average time for the 2 mile fun run in the New Year’s Eve race and a 13:19/mile average time for my 4 mile run on New Year’s morning. Both of these are among my best times so I think I am going to have to find pretty sights in order to meet my half marathon goals. Here are a couple of the sights I saw on my runs.
I am a sucker for Disney. So I finally got to see Frozen this week and I loved it. I am such a sucker for Disney animated features anyway but the fact that they are going back to their musical roots makes me even a bigger fan. After the movie, I proceeded to come home, download the entire soundtrack to my iPhone and added the song Let It Go to my running playlists. I have decided that this is my theme song for 2014.
A quality blender makes a huge difference when making smoothies. One of the things I got for Christmas was a Kohl’s gift card. So I went shopping the day after Christmas and purchased a nice Cuisinart blender. I have been playing around with smoothie recipes every since. My favorite so far is the Almond Joy Smoothie (yum):
1 Cup Coconut Almond Milk
1 pack/scoop chocolate protein powder (I use VegaOne Nutritional Shake in Rich Chocolate)
1 Cup Ice
Pour all the ingredients into a blender until well blended and ice is crushed.
My local cops love my running shoelaces. As I stated above, I ran a race on New Year’s Eve. I went all out in my pink Swirlgear hoodie, pink Zensah compression sleeve and pink NiteBeams LED shoelaces. There were cops stationed throughout the course in order to keep the roads closed (I know I didn’t want to get hit by a car!) and to make sure everyone went the correct route. Every cop I passed stated how much they liked my shoelaces. EVERY. SINGLE. COP. It was rather amusing.
2014 is going to be a great year. Lastly, as I was making my 2014 goals (I don’t do resolutions), I began to realize how fabulous the year is going to be. While I won’t be traveling too far for races (I did so much of that last year!), I have some great races on the calendar already. My cousin who ran the Duck Dash 5K with me has decided to run some more 5Ks with me this year. My sister and her best friend have decided to take up running and has agreed to do the Divas Half Marathon in Peachtree City, GA later this year. And I am going to run three half marathons in three months this spring and get my Half Fanatics number. Not to mention how excited I am about this blog this year. I can’t wait to see what the year will hold.
