With the end of the year comes all the Best of 2013 lists. I love seeing how everyone ranks everything from tweets to words to celebrity moments. So I decided to put together this Best of 2013 in Running list. Enjoy!
Best Race – Duck Dash 5K. My favorite race of the year was the Duck Dash 5K in Atlanta in December. It was a well organized event at Turner Field where the Atlanta Braves play baseball. Though it was abnormally warm for late December and slightly drizzly, it was a great experience. I set a new PR for a 5K (0:42:25) and was able to run it with my cousin who has now decided she wants to run some more 5Ks with me.
Best Running Experience – Running through Angel Stadium during the Disneyland Half Marathon on Labor Day weekend. Being a huge sports fan, I loved the idea that I would be running through the streets of Anaheim for part of the race (after running through the parks which was another highlight by the way). But my favorite part was getting to enter Angel Stadium, run around home plate then back out the stadium. The race organizers had a bunch of girl and boy scouts from the surrounding areas in the stands cheering us on. They also had the jumbo tron up and running and even announced your name over the loudspeakers as you ran by. I loved it.
Best Bling – Disneyland Half Marathon weekend races. I earned a fair amount of bling this year but the highlight was the Disneyland Half Marathon weekend. I completed the Dumbo Double Dare which means I ran the 10K on Saturday morning and the Half Marathon on Sunday morning that weekend. I received a blingy medal for each race plus a fabulous one for doing both races. To top it off, because I ran the Princess Half Marathon in February in Florida, I also received my Coast to Coast medal.
Best New Gear – Swirlgear Camo Hoodie. This year was a year for me to get more serious about my running. Which means that I ended up with all kinds of neat running gear. One of the highlights was becoming a Swirlgear brand ambassador. Swirlgear is a small business out of Chicago that makes running clothing for women by women. I just love their shirts. My favorite is their hoodies – especially the camo one. It is made out of tech fabric and keeps me nice and warm in the cold weather – whether it’s by itself or layered over another shirt. The sleeves are extra long with thumb holes to keep my hands warm and the hood has a hole in the back for my ponytail which I find a really cool feature. You can see my full review here.
Best Piece of Running Advice – You are stronger than you think. I learned so many lessons this year. The most important one and the piece of advice that I would like to give is that you are much stronger than you think. I had obstacles to overcome and there was a time when I didn’t think I could run the races that I had planned on running. I hung in there and finished the races. I walked them but I did finish them. I had no idea I had it in me to do so.
All in all, it was a pretty good year. I can’t wait to see what 2014 has in store!
